Sprout

Saving the planet one student at a time!

Sprout is an education subscription service for teachers wanting to explore the topics of climate change. Climate change in itself is a very daunting subject, so Sprout is here to make things a little bit easier. Each box comes with three activities to do inside the classroom. This upcoming semester's box is the Bloom box which includes a biodiversity assignment, a growth children’s book, and a reflection activity that promotes growing ones activism.

  • Senior capstone; 15 weeks to build a design system with multiple moving parts and deliverables.

  • The process for each deliverable was quite different. So to save some time and to fully explain each deliverable, I'll be going over each design criteria in more depth below.

I'm personally very proud of Sprout. This is a culmination of all of my design strengths and also pushed me to break out of my comfort zone in design. Working on this for 15 weeks allowed me to learn how to work under pressure, build a whole design system with different moving parts, and fully embrace the start to finish process of design.

Identity

The identity and branding for Sprout needed to be inviting and playful to engage not only students, but teachers as well. For the logo, I played on the idea of growth and researched growth stages of plants. The S, E, and T are all mimicking different stages of a plant's life cycle. The S can also stand by itself as a secondary logo. Colors chosen to highlight Sprouts brand were a light green, light blue, and a vibrant orange. Not only do these colors give the illusion of organic, but also education!

Packaging

One of the first design elements teachers and students will engage in is the packaging of Sprout. To make it exciting, I incorporated drawn elements from different deliverables and logo marks and used that as a pattern that wraps around the box. The inside of the package stays more minimalistic since the packaging is used for one of the activities.

Seeds of Change is a 24 page children’s book that is hand-illustrated and written by me. As one of the activities that comes inside the Bloom box, children will read and learn about how a singular action can spark change around one’s community, especially with climate change. All illustrations were drawn in Procreate and copy and layouts were done in Indesign.

Publication

Print

Printed material on instructions for the activities and worksheets are all included in the box. Pictured above is a trifold brochure that goes over the biodiversity assignment that is tied to the packaging.

Merchandise

Who doesn’t love a cool t-shirt? Each semester, Sprout releases optional purchases of merchandise related to the box that had just been released. Pulling from the pattern used for the packaging, the shirts and stickers are all drawings and graphics done. I’ve found that kids love to place stickers on their water bottles and notebooks, so to really showcase their love for Sprout, they can rep their appreciation for the earth wherever they go.

Social Media

In order to promote Sprout to new users, social media is one of the best ways to hit teachers' radars. I designed six Instagram posts to help highlight Sprouts message and their next subscription box.

Website

While all activities can be found inside the Bloom subscription box, there needs to be a website for ordering said box and also go more in depth on assignments. Sprout’s website highlights weekly activities, teacher spotlights, and also a storefront. Sprout is easy to navigate for teachers who might not be so tech savvy as well!
